Hey Y'all!
Yesterday was a very strange Monday with more than one unexpected twist. I will try to recreate the day for you, don't fall asleep.
I had a job interview at 9am at
Varco Pruden Steel Buildings. The interview I had with
Sonoco-CorrFlex two weeks earlier was very intimidating, with 3 people asking me many questions about my previous work experience. I don't feel as though I did very well, and since I wasn't offered the job, I must not have. So I asked Barb for a copy of some questions she had for practicing for interviews. So I was mentally prepared for yesterday's interview. I walk into the office. There is only one person interviewing me this time. His name is Terry.
Terry: Can you work any shift?
Me: Yes.
Terry shuffles thru my application, resume and test scores…
Terry: We have had problems in the past with hiring truck drivers. They keep getting the urge to go back on the road.
Me: I can promise you that isn't going to happen.
Terry: I think I have just the job for you. Let’s walk thru the plant.
I get a tour of the plant then Terry takes me to the spot where my job would be. He introduces me to Jeff, the job supervisor.
Before arriving at the interview I already knew a little about their pay scale, and it looked like if I was hired I would start at a grade 4, or maybe 5 at the most. (I will explain the pay grades later)
Terry: This job is the highest pay grade available, it’s a 7.
Terry: Jeff, I think Fred would be great for this job.
Terry leaves
Jeff: Do you want the job? When can you start? We just need to schedule your physical.
In retrospect, it is at this point that I should have just said “well, duh!” or maybe something else to the affirmative.
Me: I think so, but I would like to talk to my wife first.
Jeff: No problem.
Jeff takes me back to the receptionist, Sabra
Jeff: Fred needs to talk to his wife first but then we need to set up his physical.
Jeff leaves
Me: It won’t be today that I get my physical, I have to go to work. It may be later in the week. What is the latest time during the day I can get the physical?
Sabra: 3pm
Me: Ok, I will call you.
I went to work, where I was told to pickup a load in Salisbury, NC and deliver it to Shelby, NC.
There are several reasons why I wanted to talk to Alie first.
1) We thought this job was going to be 3rd shift, but it turns out to be 2nd shift. 3rd shift actually works better for us seeing each other once she comes back home to work (which will probably be Jan 2 07). So I wanted her opinion, which was that 2nd shift should be just fine.
2) I needed to crunch the numbers to see if I could afford to take the job. I came into the interview thinking that I really couldn’t afford it. ( I will do the math for you later)
3) I also came into the interview resigned to the idea that I would probably have to keep driving trucks for awhile. I figured that if I couldn’t even get a 3rd shift forklift job at a company where an employee (Barb) was giving me sparkling personal references, then I probably wouldn’t get this job either. So I was not mentally prepared to be offered a higher paying job so quickly, and wanted to think it over.
4) G&P was expecting me in to work at 11am. I would not have had time to take the physical and get to work in time.
So I talked to Alie and Barb. And I did the math on the potential income. And of course I wanted the job.
I finished delivering the load to Shelby then called Sabra back.
Me: I want to confirm that I will take the job and schedule my physical. Next Monday morning would be best for me. Will that be a problem?
Sabra: I don’t think so, but I will transfer you to Novella Hazelwood who handles that.
I get Novella’s voicemail and leave a message.
I then drive over to see Alie since I am in Shelby. Just as I get there I get a call back.
Novella: I need you here at 8am for your physical and drug screen.
Me: Tomorrow?
Novella: Yes, we don’t wait a week.
Me: That’s a problem. I am a truck driver and I probably won’t be home again until the weekend.
Novella: I need you here at 8am for your physical and drug screen, we don’t wait a week.
Me: Let me call my dispatcher and I will call you back.
Satan, um I mean my dispatcher, has me set up on a load to Georgia.
Me: Can you get me home tonight? It’s very important.
Dispatcher: No, I won’t have anyone to cover that load.
Me: Can you get me home tomorrow night?
Dispatcher: No sir.
Me: (in desperation mode at this point) I wanted to give you 2 weeks notice tomorrow that I was leaving G&P for a non-driving job in Kernersville. I just found out I have to take a physical at 8am tomorrow. If you can’t get me home tonight you will force me to quit now. I am not missing out on that job.
Dispatcher: Drop the truck in Charlotte and I will make a note that you quit.
So there it is, my trucking career suddenly over. What I had been seeking had finally happened, yet I was in a funk about it. I think it was the abruptness of it all. I had planned and fully expected to give 2 weeks notice. If I had just taken the physical right away I would have been late to work but at least I would have been able to give 2 weeks notice. I understand the reasoning behind not waiting to take a physical. I should have thought about it, and they should have told me when I was there that it couldn‘t wait. But since I know I am drug free I just didn’t think about it.
So I drove the truck to Charlotte and Alie’s boss’ husband, who works in Charlotte, drove me back to Shelby. It was 6:30pm at this point and Alie didn’t get off until 10:00, so I took her car to get dinner. I went to Zaxby’s and then went to the theatre to watch Stranger Than Fiction (Slow, boring, predictable). Then when Alie got off work I drove us back to Kernersville. My poor baby, she got up at 6am Monday then drove 2.5 hrs to work, then worked 13.5 hrs then took another 2 hr ride back home, arriving at 1am this morning. Then she got up this morning at 8:30 and drove back to Shelby again.
**Note to the readers - This is actually my second time typing out the text to this post. It is at this point in the first attempt that my two leftist fingers decided to go spastic and hit some of the bottom left keys and whammo! Everything disappeared! Not sure just what happened but ctrl/v didn’t bring it back. I had not been saving it because as you type a post on Blogger it auto-saves it every minute or so. Or at least it says it does. When I clicked on “restore post” it had actually only saved the first few lines. So I gave up and went to bed for a nap. Couldn’t sleep and here I am again.**
I took my physical this morning, I think it went well enough. Novella says it will be about a week before they get the results from the background check, so I guess I have a few days off. I don’t expect there to be any problems, but if for some reason they don’t approve of my physical or background check, I might actually be unemployed.
I am not sure what my job title will be, but I can try to explain what I would be doing. I would take a coil of steel and feed it into a machine that punches, or maybe drills, holes in it. Then it goes into a machine that heats it up, then it goes thru a machine that shapes it. That's my job, and I would eventually be expected to run about 10,000 feet of steel thru there each day.
Ok let me explain the pay grades.
Pay grade 4 starts at $12.99 then after 60 days goes to $13.75 then after another 60 days goes to $15.28
Pay grade 5 starts at $13.52 then after 60 days goes to $14.32 then after another 60 days goes to $15.91
$15.91 x 40 hrs x 52 wks = $33,092.80 annually
Which represents a loss of annual income of about $12,000
This is the reason I thought I couldn’t afford to take this job.
Pay grade 7 starts at $16.something and goes to $17.something (sorry forgot the cents)
Oh, I forgot to mention the mandatory overtime. They are working 10 hr days and 8 hrs on Saturday (another reason I wanted to talk to Alie first).
So…
$17.00 x 40 hrs x 52 wks = $35,360.00
Plus…
$25.50 x 18 hrs x 52 wks = $23,868.00
Equals…
An annual income of $59,228
Which represents an increase in income of about $14,000 while working 5-10 hrs less per week.
Like I said, “well, duh!”
